The gang of alleged oxycodone peddlers chose places to do business that they thought wouldn’t attract the law: a barbecue restaurant in Boynton Beach, a gas station on Yamato Road, a glass shop in Boca Raton, even a Best Buy.
Retail stores are a safe location to conduct drug transactions because “police do not gear their attention to that sort of activity,”
one of the alleged drug dealers told an undercover officer, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s probable cause affidavit.
But the alleged dealers apparently were wrong.
The group of at least 12 were involved in the ring from 2010 to 2012 and have since been arrested on charges including racketeering and trafficking in oxycodone. Read full story
Oxycodone is an opiate with some synthetic properties that is used in the treatment of pain. As one of a group of drugs in the narcotic pain reliever category, oxycodone is used to treat mild to severe pain, much the same way morphine is. Its use is highly regulated because of its addictive properties, and should only be used by those under the direct care of a doctor. Oxycodone
is often sold under the brand name OxyContin™ (source
The most common use of oxycodone is for after-surgery treatment when the use of other drugs is ineffective. Generally, however, the drug is only given to those who were also using it before the surgery to control pain. Oxycodone provides nearly 24-hour relief before another dose is needed and therefore becomes a convenient option for those patients needing pain relief. It is available as prescription medication at a pharmacy and thus can be taken home for use in treating pain there.
Given how powerful the drug is, it is considered one of the best pain relievers on the market. Often, in pill form, it may be mixed with other pain relievers as well, such as acetaminophen or aspirin. Together, the drugs do a very good job of relieving patients of their pain.
What is the sentence for Drug Trafficking Oxycodone?Drug Trafficking charges
are an extremely serious offense. Very few crimes in Florida have a mandatory prison sentence included in the law and drug trafficking is one of those offenses. Drug Trafficking has nothing to do with selling or delivering of a drug. Drug Trafficking sentences are based solely on the weight of the drug possessed by the defendant. Drug Trafficking is a first degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. The required weight and sentences imposed for drug trafficking oxycodone are:
- 3 years mandatory prison and $50,000 fine – 4 grams or more but less than 14 grams of oxycodone.
- 15 year mandatory prison and $100,000 fine -14 grams or more but less than 28 grams of oxycodone.
- 25 year mandatory prison and $500,000 fine -28 grams or more but less than 30 kilograms of oxycodone.
- Life In Prison – 30 kilograms or more of oxycodone.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, officials are highly concerned about the sharp increase in the illegal trafficking and abuse of the prescription pain medication, OxyContin, and its generic version, oxycodone. OxyContin is legally prescribed for patients who are suffering from moderate to severe pain. However, OxyContin/oxycodone has now become one of the most abused and most trafficked drugs.

Many Oxycodone offense cases involve false allegations. The police may notice the medication during a routine traffic stop and charge you with possession. If the amount of Oxycodone is over four grams, the police can charge you with drug trafficking. However, neither of these are valid allegations if you have a prescription for the medication or the pills were left over from a former prescription. If you have a prescription, having possession of the drugs is legal.
