Car Theft in West Palm is a Troubling Trend
Experts have been reporting a strong decline in the number of car thefts over the past decade. This decline may be a result of new and improved security technology, better response rates on the side of law enforcement, or a variety of other reasons. However, the Palm Beach Post has recently published an article attesting that fun fact, after a near decade of declining car thefts, grand theft auto seems to be a crime on the rise yet again. More often than not, cars are stolen and used to commit other crimes, or are stripped and sold for parts.
First Arrest for Synthetic Marijuana in Florida
For the first time since the rise of the popular "alternative" to marijuana - synthetic pot, an arrest has been made of a man accused of distributing the substance. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has dramatically shifted the movement against synthetic marijuana that has been freely available at gas stations and head shops throughout Florida. Florida legislators have been itching to act against the widely available psychoactive substance and now, this arrest in Palm Beach County marks the first ever federal charge for distributing a now controlled substance.
Palm Beach County Cop Arrested for Stalking
Stalking is not a crime often reported in news headlines but in this case, it caught the attention of reporters because the accused is a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy. The accusations are that the officer used his law enforcement resources to aggressively stalk his ex-girlfriend. Crimes like these are disappointing for any South Florida resident to stomach because our community expects security and a sense of honor and duty from our local law enforcement. Seeing police officers abuse their power and their resources to manipulate other people causes a lack of faith in the justice system put in place to protect our community.
Assistant City Attorney Fired After Drinking and Driving Incident
In February, there was a significant incident involving the Assistant City Attorney Gabrielle Taylor and the city of Port St. Lucie that resulted in the termination of her career. On February 24th, I had posted about Taylor and how she had completely avoided a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test after being pulled over on suspicions of drinking and driving. Instead of performing these tests which potentially could lead to an arrest, the officer on duty actually gave the attorney a ride home. The actions taken by law enforcement has caused an series of arguments and questions directed at city officials.
MMA Fighter Charged with Using Hands as Deadly Weapons
There have been a few mixed martial arts fighters making headlines in recent years for breaking the law. As the sport grows in popularity, so does the amount of media attention the athletes are forced to contend with. MMA Fighter Fernando Rodrigues was recently arrested and charged with several crimes after a road rage incident where he allegedly pistol-whipped another person in addition to punching and kicking him several times and putting him into a wrestling hold. Palm Beach Post covered the details of the confrontation after the victim spoke out to the public.
Drug Trafficking Shifting to Crack Cocaine from Prescription Drugs
Law enforcement officers are seeing a rise in crack cocaine distribution around South Florida. The issue is making its way up the chain spurring undercover sweeps and the like. If you have been accused of possessing or trafficking cocaine, it is imperative you contact a lawyer immediately because law enforcement officials are trying to keep a closer eye on drug trafficking.
Ponzi Scheme in South Florida
Ponzi schemes are investment fraud schemes that generally show up on the news. These fraudulent investments attract an abundance of media attention because they generally involve very wealthy people or people commonly known to the general public. In this case, Scott Rothstein and his uncle were co-conspirators in a $1 billion Ponzi scheme that is now coming to a close.
Illegal Weapons Deal in Pompano Beach Turns Deadly
Undercover police officers put their lives on the line to catch crimes in the act. Law enforcement use police officers to pose as buyers for drugs, weapons, and several other illegal activities. While these methods are often successful, the possibility of entrapment can be an issue. In Pompano Beach, a gun deal involving an undercover deputy went wrong, resulting in the death of the gun dealer.
What is Entrapment?
Many times, a legal defense for the prosecution of a crime includes the definition of entrapment. However, entrapment can be a very difficult defense to use as law enforcement officers are continuously growing more cautious and prepared when planning to catch criminal activity. The only way to be able to use entrapment as a criminal defense is if you have a complete understanding of what it entails and what it means for you.
Animal Law Conference Next Tuesday
Animal law is evolving rapidly and the changes can be seen throughout the nation. The laws in South Florida changed to make the laws that protect animals much stricter, specifically the tethering laws. These new laws have seen a spike in animal cruelty arrests in the area, and the laws are only continuing to change.
