How Leaving Your Child Alone For A Few Minutes Can Result in Child Neglect Charges

child-neglect-charges-1_180x120-150x119According to a Palm Beach Post article, a Boynton Beach man has been arrested on child neglect charges after his 4-year-old son was found wandering in the street wearing nothing but sweat pants, a t-shirt, and no shoes on a 30-degree night.

Romilus Duvelsaint was charged with child neglect. His son was found when a passing motorist saw the boy in the road and stopped. The boy was uninjured and the motorist put the boy in the car until Boynton Beach Police arrived on the scene. The boy gave directions to his house to the officers and when police arrived at his home, family members claimed they had no idea the child was supposed to be home.

Duvelsaint arrived in the mean time, and claimed that when he left the house the boy was sleeping and he yelled to his sister that he was leaving. The police report does say that he did not make sure she heard his announcement.

The sister was also apparently asleep according to the article, and had no idea Duvelsaint had left the house.

“Damn, I never waited for a reply. Just went to the store to get him clothes for the cold weather,” Duvelsaint said, according to the report.

Police took Duvelsaint to the Palm Beach County Jail where he is being held on $3,000 bond. The boy was left in the care of the aunt, and the state Department of Children and Families was notified of the incident.
