Several Florida news outlets have reported that an 18 year old man from Okeechobee, Florida was arrested for beating up a 16 year old autistic boy at a house party. In a video posted to Facebook, the 18 year man stands over the cowering 16 year old boy, punching him in the head and cursing at him, as several others stand by, laughing and taunting the victim. The 16 year old victim also told police that the man held a knife to his throat and choked him. The 16 year old boy suffers from autism and has reported that this was the reason that led to the beating. Hate crimes are one of the oldest types of crimes throughout human history. The drive to inflict harm upon others specifically because of race, gender, or religious views has been a practice only recently punished by the law. However, these crimes do continue to exist and can happen right in your own backyard. In St. Petersburg, Fla., a man has been charged with a hate crime after allegedly stabbing a man after learning the man is a Muslim. Before the September 11 attacks, there were about 400 to 500 hate crimes reported each year. One month after the attacks, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), received more than 700 reports of hate crimes.
