Marijuana Grow Houses, Marijuana Legalization, Its Costs and Benefits Weighed

A Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office SWAT unit found a marijuana grow house at a home in suburban Delray Beach this morning, according to a PBSO spokesman. Police obtained a search warrant for a home at 15180 Monroe Road, where they found the marijuana plants. The home was unoccupied when police executed the search warrant. No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing, said PBSO spokesman Eric Davis. (source) Colorado and Washington were the first two states to legalize recreational marijuana in last November’s election. However, what has happened in those states since the election? Have retail pot shops popped up on every corner? Are marijuana users smoking everywhere, or have federal raids dramatically increased? Hardly In Colorado, the immediate effect Amendment 64 has been the legalization of the… […]

Marijuana Grow House Found In West Palm Beach

A 32-year-old suburban West Palm Beach man is being accused of turning his home into a marijuana-manufacturing plant after authorities found almost 30 plants growing in three separate rooms. Alexei Garcia was arrested Friday on charges of manufacturing cannabis, trafficking in cannabis and possession of a dwelling to manufacture controlled substances. He was released Saturday after posting a $13,000 bond. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s SWAT team executed a search warrant Friday at Garcia’s home in suburban West Palm Beach on Carambola Road north of Forest Hill Boulevard. Upon arriving at the home investigators noticed a “profuse odor or cannabis” outside, according to a sheriff’s probable cause affidavit. An Initiative to Legalize Marijuana and 5 Worst States To Get Busted With Pot

An Initiative to Legalize Marijuana and 5 Worst States To Get Busted With Pot

In November this year Colorado and Washington voters passed an initiative to legalize marijuana for recreational use (source). “The world of voters spoke and we heard them,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. “Obviously, the majority felt it should be treated more like alcohol,” he added. But there’s a big catch: marijuana is still listed as a Schedule One drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act, which makes it every bit as illegal as heroin. Gov. Hickenlooper is aware of the challenge: “If we can’t legalize it, how do we decriminalize it? How do we get as close as we can to the will of the voters? It’s not immediately apparent,” he told Scott Pelley in an interview early Wednesday morning. The Justice Department weighed in on Wednesday, according to the… […]

Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana. Is the Law More Impaired Than the Driver?

Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana. Is the Law More Impaired Than the Driver?

Clearing the Smoke on New Marijuana Laws There are going to be a lot more impaired drivers on the road now that marijuana use is legal in Colorado and Washington. And the laws regarding driving under the influence of marijuana are tricky. Police have the right to arrest you if you have small amounts of THC in your system. They have the right to blood test you even if they think you look high. This is a problem because many people look high all the time and just about everyone looks high driving home after a long day at work. A police officer may detect the presence of drugs through a test done with breath, blood, or urine. However, since there isn’t an exact number to prove toxicity like the… […]

Clearing The Haze On The New Marijuana Laws

Clearing The Haze On The New Marijuana Laws

On November 6, Colorado and Washington State passed laws making the recreational use of marijuana legal. While this is a victory for the occasional marijuana user there are still many uncertainties. Hundreds of misdemeanor marijuana cases have already been dropped and many Colorado and Washington police departments have stopped charging adults 21 years and older for small-scale possession. But because marijuana possession is still a federal crime, the question remains – if you are caught with marijuana will you be arrested? The answer depends less on the law and more on the location. Liberal jurisdictions in Colorado will not bring up any charges but prosecutors in more conservative precincts have vowed to press ahead with existing marijuana cases and are still citing people for possession. Additionally, several towns in the… […]
