St. Lucie County Makes Headlines for Animal Cruelty

Fort Pierce has made headlines for one of the most severe cases of animal cruelty in years. St. Lucie County animal control officers on Monday were investigating the health of over 100 animals at the Sanctuary Animal Refuge in Western St. Lucie County. Officials were called to the property after an argument erupted between Palena Dorsey, the owner of Sanctuary Animal Refuge, and Jay Apicella, executive director of the Dogs & Cats Forever shelter in Fort Pierce. When deputies arrived to mitigate the argument between Apicella and Dorsey, they immediately called animal control officials when they witnessed the conditions the animals were kept in. A Lantana pet shop owner has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty. A discovery at Forever Puppies led authorities to search her apartment where they found a gruesome scene. The woman had been known to stockpile animals in her home, but authorities were hardly prepared for what they found there. The Case According to an article in WPTV News, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control workers moved through the apartment of Debora Van Oort, the owner of Forever Puppies, taking in one disturbing sight after another, until they reached the kitchen and pulled open the freezer. According to an article in WPTV News, Palm Beach County commissioners passed new legislation Tuesday rewriting the r ules and regulations regarding animals in an effort to prevent animal cruelty. The legislation mostly focuses on the purchase and care of animals. The new laws According to the article, dogs can no longer be left tied up or put in pens smaller than 80 square feet when left out doors. Pet stores must now disclose the medical histories and birthplaces of individual animals. Guard dogs now must be licensed and stored in cages of a certain size. Last week, WPTV News posted an article describing the death of a 3-year-old boy caused by blunt force trauma. The tragic part of this case is that the trauma was a result of child abuse. The article read: a woman and her boyfriend are accused of the beating death of her 3-year-old son after he wet his pants. Authorities say 26-year-old Robin Greinke and 33-year-old Steven Neil were arrested Thursday. They each face charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect. Orange County Sheriff’s investigators say Noah Fake died Tuesday morning. An autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to the boy’s head. Cat Killer Case Goes to Trial in Palm Beach County, Florida

A former teacher who is accused of leaving her two cats in her apartment for over a month without food or water is in Palm Beach County court this week. The Boca Raton Woman said she didn’t have time to feed her animals and didn’t check them for over a month, according to police. Jury selection in the Alison Dinsmore felony animal cruelty trial began Monday and closing arguments are today. Alison Dinsmore was a teacher at Congress Middle School in Boynton Beach when she was arrested in April 2009. Prosecutors argue that the cats died an extraordinarily cruel death, clawing in cabinets for food and searching for water.
